SO, who are we thanking?

The First Thanksgiving Proclamation (June 20, 1676)On June 20, 1676, the governing council of Charlestown, Massachusetts, held a meeting to determine how best to express thanks for the good fortune that had seen their community securely established. By unanimous vote they instructed Edward Rawson, the clerk, to proclaim June 29 as a day of thanksgiving, our first. That proclamation is reproduced here in the same language and spelling as the original."The Holy God having by a long and Continual Series of his Afflictive dispensations in and by the present War with the Heathen Natives of this land, written and brought to pass bitter things against his own Covenant people in this wilderness, yet so that we evidently discern that in the midst of his judgments he hath remembered mercy, having remembered his Footstool in the day of his sore displeasure against us for our sins, with many singular Intimations of his Fatherly Compassion, and regard; reserving many of our Towns from Desolation Threatened, and attempted by the Enemy, and giving us especially of late with many of our Confederates many signal Advantages against them, without such Disadvantage to ourselves as formerly we have been sensible of, if it be the Lord's mercy that we are not consumed, It certainly bespeaks our positive Thankfulness, when our Enemies are in any measure disappointed or destroyed; and fearing the Lord should take notice under so many Intimations of his returning mercy, we should be found an Insensible people, as not standing before Him with Thanksgiving, as well as lading him with our Complaints in the time of pressing Afflictions:The Council has thought meet to appoint and set apart the 29th day of this instant June, as a day of Solemn Thanksgiving and praise to God for such his Goodness and Favour, many Particulars of which mercy might be Instanced, but we doubt not those who are sensible of God's Afflictions, have been as diligent to espy him returning to us; and that the Lord may behold us as a People offering Praise and thereby glorifying Him; the Council doth commend it to the Respective Ministers, Elders and people of this Jurisdiction; Solemnly and seriously to keep the same Beseeching that being persuaded by the mercies of God we may all, even this whole people offer up our bodies and souls as a living and acceptable Service unto God by Jesus Christ."***George Washington's1789 Thanksgiving ProclamationWhereas it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor; and Whereas both Houses of Congress have, by their joint committee, requested me "to recommend to the people of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness:"Now, therefore, I do recommend and assign Thursday, the 26th day of November next, to be devoted by the people of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being who is the beneficent author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be; that we may then all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks for His kind care and protection of the people of this country previous to their becoming a nation; for the signal and manifold mercies and the favorable interpositions of His providence in the course and conclusion of the late war; for the great degree of tranquility, union, and plenty which we have since enjoyed; for the peaceable and rational manner in which we have been enable to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national one now lately instituted' for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed, and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and, in general, for all the great and various favors which He has been pleased to confer upon us.And also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech Him to pardon our national and other transgressions; to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually; to render our National Government a blessing to all the people by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed; to protect and guide all sovereigns and nations (especially such as have show kindness to us), and to bless them with good governments, peace, and concord; to promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the increase of science among them and us; and, generally to grant unto all mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as He alone knows to be best.Given under my hand, at the city of New York, the 3d dy of October, A.D. 1789. I'm learning to stoop.

Stoop! Stoop!

To Samuel Mather

Reverend Sir, London, July 7. 1773.

By a Line of the 4th. past, I acknowledged the Receipt of your Favour of March 18. and sent you with it two Pamphlets. I now add another, a spirited Address to the Bishops who opposed the Dissenter's Petition. It is written by a Dissenting Minister at York. There is preserv'd at the End of it a little fugitive Piece of mine, written on the same Occasion.

I perused your Tracts with Pleasure. I see you inherit all the various Learning of your famous Ancestors Cotton and Increase Mather both of whom I remember. The Father, Increase, I once when a Boy, heard preach at the Old South, for Mr. Pemberton, and remember his mentioning the Death of "that wicked old Persecutor of God's People Lewis the XIV." of which News had just been received, but which proved premature. I was some years afterwards at his House at the Northend, on some Errand to him, and remember him sitting in an easy Chair apparently very old and feeble. But Cotton I remember in the Vigour of his Preaching and Usefulness. And particularly in the Year 1723, now half a Century since, I had reason to remember, as I still do a Piece of Advice he gave me. I had been some time with him in his Study, where he condescended to entertain me, a very Youth, with some pleasant and instructive Conversation. As I was taking my Leave he accompany'd me thro' a narrow Passage at which I did not enter, and which had a Beam across it lower than my Head. He continued Talking which occasion'd me to keep my Face partly towards him as I retired, when he suddenly cry'd out, Stoop! Stoop! Not immediately understanding what he meant, I hit my Head hard against the Beam. He then added, Let this be a Caution to you not always to hold your Head so high; Stoop, young Man, stoop -- as you go through the World -- and you'll miss many hard Thumps. This was a way of hammering Instruction into one's Head: And it was so far effectual, that I have ever since remember'd it, tho' I have not always been able to practise it. By the way, permit me to ask if you are the Son or Nephew of that Gentleman? for having lived so many Years far from New England, I have lost the Knowledge of some Family Connections.

You have made the most of your Argument to prove that America might be known to the Ancients. The Inhabitants being totally ignorant of the use of Iron, looks, however, as if the Intercourse could never have been very considerable; and that if they are Descendants of our Adam, they left the Family before the time of Tubalcain. There is another Discovery of it claimed by the Norwegians, which you have not mentioned, unless it be under the Words "of old viewed and observed" Page 7. About 25 Years since, Professor Kalm, a learned Swede, was with us in Pensilvania. He contended that America was discovered by their Northern People long before the Time of Columbus, which I doubting, he drew up and gave me sometime after a Note of those Discoveries which I send you enclos'd. It is his own Hand writing, and his own English very intelligible for the time he had been among us. The Circumstances give the Account great Appearance of Authenticity. And if one may judge by the Description of the Winter, the Country they visited should be southward of New England, supposing no Change since that time of the Climate. But if it be true as Krantz and I think other Historians tell us, that old Greenland once inhabited and populous, is now render'd uninhabitable by Ice, it should seem that the almost perpetual northern Winter has gained ground to the Southward, and if so, perhaps more northern Countries might anciently have had Vines than can bear them in these Days. The Remarks you have added, on the late Proceedings against America, are very just and judicious: and I cannot at all see any Impropriety in your making them tho' a Minister of the Gospel. This Kingdom is a good deal indebted for its Liberties to the Publick Spirit of its ancient Clergy, who join'd with the Barons in obtaining Magna Charta, and join'd heartily in forming Curses of Excommunication against the Infringers of it. There is no doubt but the Claim of Parliament of Authority to make Laws binding on the Colonists in all Cases whatsoever, includes an Authority to change our Religious Constitution, and establish Popery or Mahometanism if they please in its Stead: but, as you intimate Power does not infer Right; and as the Right is nothing and the Power (by our Increase) continually diminishing, the one will soon be as insignificant as the other. You seem only to have made a small Mistake in supposing they modestly avoided to declare they had a Right, the words of the Act being that they have, and of right ought to have full Power, &c.;

Your Suspicion that "sundry others, besides Govr Bernard had written hither their Opinions and Counsels, encouraging the late Measures, to the Prejudice of our Country, which have been too much heeded and follow'd" is I apprehend but too well founded. You call them "traitorous Individuals" whence I collect, that you suppose them of our own country. There was among the twelve Apostles one Traitor who betrayed with a Kiss. It should be no Wonder therefore if among so many Thousand true Patriots as New England contains there should be found even Twelve Judases, ready to betray their Country for a few paltry Pieces of Silver. Their Ends, as well as their Views, ought to be similar. But all these Oppressions evidently work for our Good. Providence seems by every Means intent on making us a great People. May our Virtues publick and private grow with us, and be durable, that Liberty Civil and Religious, may be secur'd to our Posterity, and to all from every Part of the old World that take Refuge among us.

I have distributed the Copies of your Piece as you desired. I cannot apprehend they can give just Cause of Offence.

Your Theological Tracts in which you discover your great Reading, are rather more out of my Walk, and therefore I shall say little of them. That on the Lord's Prayer I read with most Attention, having once myself considered a little the same Subject, and attempted a Version of the Prayer which I thought less exceptionable. I have found it among my old Papers, and send it you only to show an Instance of the same Frankness in laying myself open to you, which you say you have used with regard to me. With great Esteem and my best Wishes for a long Continuance of your Usefulness, I am, Reverend Sir, Your most obedient humble Servant

Dr. Benjamin Franklin

Interesting Sermon this week

We had an enlightening one yesterday. We are working through Acts, and are on acts 5 the conversion of Paul. And talking about how he had to empty himself before God could use him. And it was a direct result of Paul's emptiness. Being hated by everyone and having nothing that gave us Christianity as we know it.

He also spoke about Abe Lincoln, I didn't realize this but after the Battle at Gettysburg The main speaker called wasn't Abe Lincoln, Lincoln was asked as an after thought. His wife was very ill, had lost his son, everyone hated him, the opposing political party wanted him out of power, and he was suffering from depression. He was in the lowest place of his life. He was asked to write a "few" words. The speaker preceding him spoke for 2 hours and got thunderous applause. And he told his adviser, I don't think my speech is going to be good enough.

But he went on anyway, and in his brokenness God brought us the Gettysburg Address, one of the most quoted speeches in the world.

It was from God using Abe Lincoln also that we could even imagine to have a black president.

That in itself shows that Yes, God does use us. And he uses us the most usually when we are broken, and feel empty. When we stop filling up our emptiness with useless things, like more tv, food, addictions, etc.

Treatment of Bush.. Disgraceful

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB122584386627599251.html

The Treatment of Bush Has Been a Disgrace

What must our enemies be thinking?

more in Opinion »

Earlier this year, 12,000 people in San Francisco signed a petition in support of a proposition on a local ballot to rename an Oceanside sewage plant after George W. Bush. The proposition is only one example of the classless disrespect many Americans have shown the president.

[Commentary] AP

According to recent Gallup polls, the president's average approval rating is below 30% -- down from his 90% approval in the wake of 9/11. Mr. Bush has endured relentless attacks from the left while facing abandonment from the right.

This is the price Mr. Bush is paying for trying to work with both Democrats and Republicans. During his 2004 victory speech, the president reached out to voters who supported his opponent, John Kerry, and said, "Today, I want to speak to every person who voted for my opponent. To make this nation stronger and better, I will need your support, and I will work to earn it. I will do all I can do to deserve your trust."

Those bipartisan efforts have been met with crushing resistance from both political parties.

The president's original Supreme Court choice of Harriet Miers alarmed Republicans, while his final nomination of Samuel Alito angered Democrats. His solutions to reform the immigration system alienated traditional conservatives, while his refusal to retreat in Iraq has enraged liberals who have unrealistic expectations about the challenges we face there.

It seems that no matter what Mr. Bush does, he is blamed for everything. He remains despised by the left while continuously disappointing the right.

Yet it should seem obvious that many of our country's current problems either existed long before Mr. Bush ever came to office, or are beyond his control. Perhaps if Americans stopped being so divisive, and congressional leaders came together to work with the president on some of these problems, he would actually have had a fighting chance of solving them.

Like the president said in his 2004 victory speech, "We have one country, one Constitution and one future that binds us. And when we come together and work together, there is no limit to the greatness of America."

To be sure, Mr. Bush is not completely alone. His low approval ratings put him in the good company of former Democratic President Harry S. Truman, whose own approval rating sank to 22% shortly before he left office. Despite Mr. Truman's low numbers, a 2005 Wall Street Journal poll found that he was ranked the seventh most popular president in history.

Just as Americans have gained perspective on how challenging Truman's presidency was in the wake of World War II, our country will recognize the hardship President Bush faced these past eight years -- and how extraordinary it was that he accomplished what he did in the wake of the September 11 attacks.

The treatment President Bush has received from this country is nothing less than a disgrace. The attacks launched against him have been cruel and slanderous, proving to the world what little character and resolve we have. The president is not to blame for all these problems. He never lost faith in America or her people, and has tried his hardest to continue leading our nation during a very difficult time.

Our failure to stand by the one person who continued to stand by us has not gone unnoticed by our enemies. It has shown to the world how disloyal we can be when our president needed loyalty -- a shameful display of arrogance and weakness that will haunt this nation long after Mr. Bush has left the White House.

Mr. Shapiro is an investigative reporter and lawyer who previously interned with John F. Kerry's legal team during the presidential election in 2004.

Twas the Night Before the Elections (from an email fwd)

The other day I was reading Newsweek magazine and came across some Poll data I found rather hard to believe. It must be true given the source, right?

The Newsweek poll alleges that 67 percent of Americans are unhappy with the direction the country is headed and 69 percent of the country is unhappy with the performance of the President. In essence 2/3 of the citizenry just ain't happy and want a change. So being the knuckle dragger I am, I started thinking, 'What are we so unhappy about?''

A.. Is it that we have electricity and running water 24 hours a day, 7 Days a week?

B.. Is our unhappiness the result of having air conditioning in the summer and heating in the winter?

C.. Could it be that 95.4 percent of these unhappy folks have a job?

D.. Maybe it is the ability to walk into a grocery store at any time and see more food in moments than Darfur has seen in the last year?

E.. Maybe it is the ability to drive our cars and trucks from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean without having to present identification papers as we move through each state?

F.. Or possibly the hundreds of clean and safe motels we would find along the way that can provide temporary shelter?

G.. I guess having thousands of restaurants with varying cuisine from around the world is just not good enough either.

H.. Or could it be that when we wreck our car, emergency workers show up and provide services to help all and even send a helicopter to take you to the hospital.

I.. Perhaps you are one of the 70 percent of Americans who own a home.

J.. You may be upset with knowing that in the unfortunate case of a fire, a group of trained firefighters will appear in moments and use top notch equipment to extinguish the flames, thus saving you, your family, and your belongings.

K.. Or if, while at home watching one of your many flat screen TVs, a burglar or prowler intrudes, an officer equipped with a gun and a bullet-proof vest will come to defend you and your family against attack or loss .

L.. This all in the backdrop of a neighborhood free of bombs or militias raping and pillaging the residents. Neighborhoods where 90% of teenagers own cell phones and computers.

M.. How about the complete religious, social and political freedoms we enjoy that are the envy of everyone in the world?

Maybe that is what has 67% of you folks unhappy.

Fact is, we are the largest group of ungrateful, spoiled brats the world has ever seen. No wonder the world loves the U.S. , yet has a great disdain for its citizens. They see us for what we are. The most blessed people in the world who do nothing but complain about what we don't have, and what we hate about the country instead of thanking the good Lord we live here.

I know, I know. What about the president who took us into war and has no plan to get us out? The president who has a measly 31 percent approval rating? Is this the same president who guided the nation in the dark days after 9/11? The president that cut taxes to bring an economy out of recession? Could this be the same guy who has been called every name in the book for succeeding in keeping all the spoiled ungrateful brats safe from terrorist attacks? The commander in chief of an all-volunteer army that is out there defending you and me?

Did you hear how bad the President is on the news or talk show? Did this news affect you so much, make you so unhappy you couldn't take a look around for yourself and see all the good things and be glad? Think about it.....are you upset at the President because he actually caused you personal pain OR is it because the 'Media' told you he was failing to kiss your sorry ungrateful behind every day.

Make no mistake about it. The troops in Iraq and Afghanistan have volunteered to serve, and in many cases may have died for your freedom. There is currently no draft in this country. They didn't have to go. They are able to refuse to go and end up with either a ''general'' discharge, an 'other than honorable'' discharge or, worst case scenario, a
''dishonorable' ' discharge after a few days in the brig.

So why then the flat-out discontentment in the minds of 69 percent of Americans?

Say what you want but I blame it on the media. If it bleeds it leads and they specialize in bad news. Everybody will watch a car crash with blood and guts How many will watch kids selling lemonade at the corner? The media knows this and media outlets are for-profit corporations. They offer what sells, and when criticized, try to defend their actions by 'justifying' them in one way or another Just ask why they tried to allow a murderer like O.J. Simpson to write a book about how he didn't kill his wife, but if he did he would have done it this way......Insane!

Turn off the TV, burn Newsweek, and use the New York Times for the bottom of your bird cage. Then start being grateful for all we have as country. There is exponentially more good than bad. We are among the most blessed people on Earth and should thank God several times a day, or at least be thankful and appreciative.' 'With hurricanes, tornados, fires out of control, mud slides, flooding, severe thunderstorms tearing up the country from one end to another, and with the threat of bird flu and terrorist attacks, 'Are we sure this is a good time to take God out of the Pledge of Allegiance?'

Study Shows McCain Media Coverage Mostly Negative

The Project for Excellence in Journalism's report shows John McCain's media coverage has been 57 percent negative, while Barack Obama's has been 29 percent negative.

AP
Wednesday, October 22, 2008

NEW YORK -- John McCain may long for the days when Barack Obama got the lion's share of the media attention: Coverage of the Republican candidate has been overwhelmingly negative since the conventions ended, a study released Wednesday found.
The Project for Excellence in Journalism's report illustrates how the media echo chamber can send things spiraling out of control for a candidate. It's likely to give ammunition to people who say the press has been biased against McCain, but the organization said its findings on this were inconclusive.
"It's quite possible for there to be elements of enthusiasm for one candidate or another," said Tom Rosenstiel, director of the Washington-based think tank. "That's a failure of professionalism if it's there. But this report can't suss it out."
McCain and Obama have received an equal amount of media attention since the conventions.
The project judged 57 percent of the stories about McCain as negative, with 14 percent positive. The rest were neutral.
Obama's coverage was mixed: 36 percent positive, 29 percent negative, 35 percent neutral, the study found.
"I guess it's inevitable, but it does reflect the relentless degree to which winning begets winning," Rosenstiel said. "The polls are so ubiquitous that it is difficult for them not to be the picture frame through which the press views everything."
McCain's poll numbers have been sinking. As a result, many of the stories about him are about why his poll numbers are sinking -- and how whatever he says or does is an attempt to stop his poll numbers from sinking, he said.
The economic crisis, and McCain's response to it, also played poorly for him in the press. His attempt to deflect attention with attacks on Obama and his ties to 1960s radical William Ayers did even worse, the study found. During this time, news organizations also did critical fact-checks on some McCain ads, including one on Obama and sex education.
Changes in the media have also heightened the sense of piling on, Rosenstiel said. There are more polls to report on, hence more stories to say McCain is doing poorly in them. The 24-hour news networks are paying a great deal of attention to the campaign because it gets ratings, making for more repeating of stories done elsewhere, he said.
The cable networks have been showing off new iPhone-like technology that allows them to pull up maps of the country and data, and the electoral maps haven't been good for McCain.
Financial cutbacks also mean less time for news organizations to do enterprise reporting, again making for more repetition.
Rosenstiel noted that Obama's coverage was negative during the week after the GOP convention, when the surging McCain had the Democrat on his heels and talking about lipstick and pigs. McCain's negative coverage closely tracks the tone of Democrat Al Gore's during the 2000 campaign, he said.
A similar thing happened during the latter stages of Hillary Clinton's campaign against Obama, said David Gregory, host of MSNBC's "Race to the White House."
"There's a lot of focus on the campaign that is in decline to explain why that is happening, and then it becomes in the eye of the beholder whether that is fair or unfair treatment," Gregory said. "The best we can do is challenge both sides substantively."
The McCain campaign did not immediately return messages seeking comment.
Sarah Palin has received three times the press attention as the Democratic vice presidential candidate, Joe Biden, the study found. Her stories were judged 39 percent negative, 33 percent mixed and 28 percent positive.
Palin's coverage started out positive but turned when reporters went to Alaska to check on her record as governor. The study found only 5 percent of the stories were about Palin's family, most of them in the days after it was revealed her daughter was pregnant.
The Project for Excellence in Journalism studied some 2,412 stories from 48 news outlets for its study, including newspapers, Web sites and broadcast and cable news. A smaller sample, 857 stories, was used to judge the tone of the coverage.

Newburg Update on Daylight Curfew

Victory in Newberg!

Thank you for your prayers about the proposed daytime curfew in Newberg-Dundee. The proposed daytime curfew failed. Below you will find reports from two who attended the meeting: Wes Butler from OCEANetwork and April McGowan from Newberg Enjoy Learning Together support group.

I also heard from several of you that other cities in Oregon have daytime curfews. Here’s the list we currently know about.

Beaverton
Eugene
Keizer
McMinnville
Ontario
Pendleton
Portland
Salem
Springfield
Willamina

If you know of others, please email me at karmans@oceanetwork.org.

From Wes Butler, OCEANetwork Board member

I attended Newberg City Council meeting tonight, having become aware that this afternoon there was a hearing and public testimony regarding a daytime curfew ordinance. By all indication, they intended to pass this into law with a "sunset clause." There had been a previous work session a few months ago. April McGowan and Susan Dawson from the local home school support group and 3 other ladies gave testimony against the ordinance, along with myself. HSLDA had sent a fairly lengthy memorandum against daytime curfews signed by T.J . Schmidt. I informed the council that HSLDA has 85,000-90,000 families closely associated with it and that OCEANetwork has never supported daytime curfews as a state organization.

The mayor and five councilors were present. Because of the questions the council asked, I would have guessed a sure passage, especially with the escape route (sunset clause), that it would help fight crime, and the notion that 'it really won't hurt anything.' The final vote: one abstention (he may have proposed the bill), and 5 denying the passage of the ordinance.

By God's grace there is no daytime curfew in Newberg. Maybe in our spare time we should begin overturning these slippery-slope bad laws.

Victory for Homeschooling Freedom in Newberg

The Newberg City Council met to decide upon a day light curfew, Ordinance No. 2008-2007 on October 20, 2008.

After hearing Chief of Police Casey speak in favor of the ordinance, and after much discussion, also in favor of the ordinance by the city council, the public was invited to speak. In attendance was a representative from OCEANetwork, and five homeschooling families.

Each spoke from their own personal experiences and concerns. The council was very respectful in their questions, but had some trouble empathizing w ith our concerns about the day light curfew. Once we were done speaking, the council deliberated. To be frank, it didn't sound as though we had made much of an impact with our speeches. As there was no turnout by the private school sector, only the homeschooling sector, one of the councilors deducted that they must be in favor of the ordinance. Two of the council members were undecided – on the fence – and a third wanted to have more research done, and perhaps hear more arguments at another time. Then Councilor Marc Shelton spoke. He had empathized with us, and more over, was completely against the ordinance. He took issue with the statement that the private school system must be in favor of the ordinance because they hadn't attended the meeting. He stated that if the ordinance passed, then they would most certainly be hearing from them and many more homeschooling families.

At that time, Councilor President Bob Larson agreed with Councilor Shelton, as did Mayor Bob Andrews. Then, being swayed by the other councilor's opinions, Councilors Mike Boyes and Bart Reirson withdrew their concerns and sided with Councilor Shelton. Councilor Roger Currier still felt he wanted more time and research to make the decision and abstained from the final vote—to deny Ordinance No. 2008-2707.

Having been there, seeing the odds and hearing the arguments in favor of the ordinance, I have no doubt that the Lord won the battle. I am still in awe that we won.

Thank you to everyone who wrote, called and contacted the city council. Thank you to OCEANetwork for your support (making the long drive into Newberg), and to the HSLDA who took the time to send legal documents to the city in opposition to the ordinance. It was an awe inspiring and amazing evening. I hope you will all continue to fight to preserve our homeschooling freedoms in Oregon.

Sincerely,
April McGowan

Newburg City Counsel - Daylight Curfew

Newberg City Council considering daytime curfew. You can help.

Newberg City Council is considering enacting a daytime curfew at their meeting tonight (7 p.m. Monday, October 20, 2008). Daytime curfews allow police officers to stop and question school-aged children who are in public places during school hours. This, of course, is problematic for homeschool students who might be walking to the library (or George Fox University in Newberg), on their way to a job or otherwise out in public without a parent during school hours.

Here’s how you can help:

1. Pray for the meeting tonight and the home educators who will be presenting testimony.

2. If you live in the Newberg-Dundee area or come into Newberg routinely during school hours, please attend the meeting Monday October 20th at 7 p.m. at the Newberg Public Safety Building, 401 E. Third Street, Newberg even if you don’t plan on giving testimony.

3. If you live in one of the cities in Oregon which currently have daytime curfews and if your family has been negatively impacted by the curfew, please e-mail April McGowan at april.mcgowan@gmail.com before 5 p.m. with a paragraph or two on what happened to your family.

Cities in Oregon which have daytime (school hours) curfews:

Beaverton
Eugene
Keizer
McMinnville

If you know of other cities in Oregon which have daytime curfews, please let me know at karmans@oceanetwork.org.

Thank you for praying and for helping the homeschoolers in the Newberg-Dundee area.

Fox News on Homeschooling

Homeschooling Check-In

We are doing great.
We are using Weaver from Alpha Omega, which is a Christian Unit Study Method. I add and subtract from that for History, Science, Bible, and Social Studies and Language Arts.
We do Saxon Math, both boys are in Saxon 1 at different places, and we are doing MUS together.. we started 2 weeks ago.
For Phonics we have taken a break from Teach your Child to read as it was to the point the kids could sound out words, but they weren't remembering the word to be able to just read words in the sentance form. So I added in Flashcards with Dolche words, putting 5 stars on each one before it is "done". Meaning they have to say it 5 times without help before it is considered learned. This has helped a lot with sounds like ING and ow, and simple sight words like The. Then they each read a Bob Book, I have the set of 5, so we are working through those. They enjoy them and do not get nearly as frustrated, though they are using the same words.. there is only one sentence per page, instead of a paragraph or so.
Josiah has started a handwriting book, Italic C and he loves it, so he does a page a day usually.

On our off days, when I have a migraine etc the boys have Rod and Staff workbooks, that are for fun, and They have Word Building paces from ACE. I also have them use these if I am working with the other one reading, and there is no project or art scheduled for the day.

All in all I wish they were a little further along reading wise, but boys will only go so fast. Josiah is above the reading level of my neighbor boy who is a held back 1st grader, so I figure as long as they don't get too frustrated I am pushing just hard enough. It is a bit of an issue for me sometimes mentally as I learned to read when I was 4, and did high 1st grade reading in K, but I just have to keep reminding myself that they are not me, and have their own 'gifts'.

Favorite Pro-McCain/Palin pics

Hilarious

One time I will post a link regarding Howard Stern.
Cracks me up!

Obama's Associates.. and what he has to say for himself.

College Roommates-
Sadeeki (sp)-

Columbia-
Harvard- President of Harvard Law Review. How did he get in? Lawyer of Malcom X (Sutton) said a "friend" (Dr. Kalled al Monsour (sp), top advisor to Saudi Official, and leader in the Black Panther, author, Muslim, black nationalist, enemy of Isreal) told him to help Obama get in. Not sure what Obama says yet about these people or how he got into Harvard.
Thesis was titled Soviet and nuclear disarmament.

Gamaleo (sp) Foundation- founded on radical socialist's Salalinski (sp) (Author of Rules for Radicals) ideas. Obama was a Community Organizer for them in Chicago.

Frank Marshall Davis--Obama turns to him in the moment he defines himself as black.(Obama Nation)
Who is he? Davis was a known communist who belonged to a party subservient to the Soviet Union. Black Communist Poet.
What he believes/has done? In fact, the 1951 report of the Commission on Subversive Activities to the Legislature of the Territory of Hawaii identified him as a CPUSA member. What's more, anti-communist congressional committees, including the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC), accused Davis of involvement in several communist-front organizations.

What Obama says -Obama had an admitted relationship with someone who was publicly identified as a member of the Communist Party USA (CPUSA). The record shows that Obama was in Hawaii from 1971-1979, where, at some point in time, he developed a close relationship, almost like a son, with Davis, listening to his "poetry" and getting advice on his career path. But Obama, in his book, Dreams From My Father, refers to him repeatedly as just "Frank."

Malcolm X--Obama openly admits in his book that he felt like he could relate to him. known radical Muslim. He didn't approach racism peacefully but called for violence.
Quote from Malcolm X: "I've never seen a sincere white man, not when it comes to helping black people. The white man is interested in the black man only to the extent that the black man is of use to him. The white man's interest is to make money, to exploit. The common enemy is the white man".

He was a convicted felon and belonged to the Nation of Islam after released, which called for the overthrow of the government

Bill Ayers & his wife Bernadine Dohrn--Weather Underground leaders who bombed...

http://www.gop.com/News/NewsRead.asp...6-c5fe81d901cd'
A couple quotes from here-
During The Time Obama And Ayers Served Together On The Woods Fund, Ayers Was Quoted Saying "I Don't Regret Setting Bombs ... I Feel We Didn't Do Enough." "'I don't regret setting bombs,' Bill Ayers said. 'I feel we didn't do enough.' Mr. Ayers, who spent the 1970's as a fugitive in the Weather Underground, was sitting in the kitchen of his big turn-of-the-19th-century stone house in the Hyde Park district of Chicago." (Dinitia Smith, "No Regrets For A Love Of Explosives," The New York Times, 9/11/01)

While Obama And Ayers Were Serving On The Woods Fund Together, Ayers Posed Standing On An American Flag For An Article In Chicago Magazine Entitled "No Regrets." (Marcia Froelke Coburn, "No Regrets," Chicago Magazine, 8/01)

Neighbors Have Said "It's Only Natural" That Obama Would Know Ayers, Who Often Opens His Home For Gatherings, As Obama And His Wife "Are A Part Of Our Neighborhood And Part Of Our Social Circle." "Since coming out of hiding in 1980, the couple have raised three boys in Chicago and become part of the fabric of their liberal South Side neighborhood. Neighbors said it's only natural that Obama would know Ayers and Dohrn, who often open their homes for gatherings filled with lively discussions about politics, arts and social issues. Obama and his wife 'are part of our neighborhood and part of our social circle,' said Elizabeth Chandler, a neighbor of Ayers'." (Trevor Jensen, Robert Mitchum and Mary Owen, "Bill Ayers' Turbulent Past Contrasts With Quiet Academ ic Life," Chicago Tribune, 4/17/0

Ayers- said I don't regret setting the bombs, I don't think we did enough. I would do it again.. on Sept 11th 2001 !

Obama said they were "friendly" lately he says "He isn't someone I "frequently" ask advice from." Gotta love the frequently.
Obama also said this week "I didn't know he was a terrorist". from here http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1220....html?mod=blog OK, a major in Political Science didn't know he was a terrorist.. ROFL.

Larry Grathwohl FMR FBI Informant lived with various members of Weather Underground. - Ayers taught him how to build a bomb and where to bomb.

Rashid Khalidi--frequent dinner companion of Obama's who hosts a fundraiser for him. In attendance is Ali abunimah (Palestinian, "Electronic Intifada") (Obama Nation)
Who is he- an American historian of the Middle East, is the Edward Said Professor of Arab Studies at Columbia University, and director of the Middle East Institute of Columbia's School of International and Public Affairs. Born in 1950 to a Lebanese Mother and Palestinian Father in New York. Author of Resurrecting Empire: Western Footprints and America's Perilous Path in the Middle East (2004).

What did he do/does he believe -
Khalidi's statements on the status of Palestinians in Israel and the Israeli-occupied territories have been the most controversial. In an interview on PBS, Khalidi used the term "occupied" in reference to Mandatory Palestine in 1948, saying "about half of it was occupied by Israel (which under UNGA 181 was supposed to obtain roughly 55% of Mandate Palestine, and which by the time of the armistice had taken control of about 78%, including half of what was to have been the Arab state)... the remainder was, as you say, under Egyptian and Jordanian control from 1948-1967."[10]
Worked for Wafa in the 80s and has been accused of having ties to the PLO

What does Obama say-
Obama made one of the presentations in praise of Khalidi at a 2003 farewell dinner on the occasion of Khalidi leaving the Chicago Area.[20] The dinner was a celebration of the Chicago area Palestinian community. Obama's remarks alluded to the numerous dinners that he had at the home of the Khalidis.[20]

“This isn’t the Tony Rezko I knew,” said the senator from here http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1220....html?mod=blog

Nadhmi Auchi--Iraqi Billionaire, etc, (pg182 of Obama Nation)--This is a "tenuous connection" Obama has denied meeting Auchi but Rezko had them together for lunch at a hotel in March of this year. (I (Lydia) believe there was more info on this on RealClearPolitico--not sure if I got the spelling right.)

Reverend Wright - Obama was married by him, and attended his church for over 20 years. met in late 1980s while a COmmunity Organizer. The Audacity of Hope was inspired by one of Wright's teachings. James Cone - Black Theology and Black Power.

Frantz Fanon (and thus Saul Alinsky) -- this is someone Obama has said he felt he identified with.

Black-Liberation Theology - . Began in 1960s in Latin America, Sees Jesus as Redeemer and liberator of the oppressed, Christian Socialism. Jose Diez Balart.. stationed in El Salvador says- Anti-US, anti-Catholic movement, churches talked for need for violent revolution. Jesus was a santaista soldier.

Farrakhan --Obama joined his Million Man March. Farrakhan and Rev. Wright have an extended relationship.

David Axelrod--NO he is not a radical, but he is Obama's campaign manager. Much of the stuff Obama uses is taken from Axelrod work with Governor Deval Patrick of MA.

Joseph Cirincione--
Who is he?- "Obama's Anti-Israel No-Nuke Adviser" (Obama Nation)
President of the Ploughshares Fund (a public grantmaking foundation started by Sally Lilienthal) that supports initiatives to prevent the spread and use of nuclear, biological and chemical weapons and other weapons of war, and to prevent conflicts that could lead to the use of weapons of mass destruction.

What he has done/believes-
Anti-Nuclear weapons
Cirincione chaired and organized five of the annual Carnegie International Non-Proliferation Conferences. Cirincione had previously served as vice president for national security and international policy at the Center for American Progress in Washington, DC, and for eight years as the director for non-proliferation at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.
He is the author of Bomb Scare: The History and Future of Nuclear Weapons[2] (Columbia University Press, 2007) and Deadly Arsenals: Nuclear, Biological and Chemical Threats[3] (Carnegie Endowment, second edtion 2006) and the co-author of Universal Compliance: A Strategy for Nuclear Security [4](Carnegie Endowment, 2005) and "WMD in Iraq: Evidence and Implications"[5] (Carnegie Endowment, 2003). He is on the adjunct faculty of the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.

Regarding Obama-
In advance of the 2008 presidential campaign, Cirincione has been an informal adviser to Senator Barack Obama's campaign, focusing his work on nuclear matters

Hamas--no Obama did not "seek" them out, but they still came out in support of him.
http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com...wants-obama-2/
As far as I can tell Obama has not dispelled this, nor said he didn't want their support. His campaign has only turned around and attacked McCain's camp for bringing it up, but not said it was untrue, or said he did not want their endorsement.
http://blogs.reuters.com/trail08/200...-israel-lobby/
Obama came out as pro Isreal, and blog said he was unendorsed by Hamas. From the blog-
Hamas promply unendorsed Obama, a Christian who has had difficulty dispelling a rumor campaign suggesting he is a Muslim and that his advisers have a pro-Arab bent.

“Obama’s comments have confirmed that there will be no change in the U.S. administration’s foreign policy on the Arab-Israeli conflict,” Hamas official Sami Abu Zuhri told Reuters in Gaza.

“The Democratic and Republican parties support totally the Israeli occupation at the expense of the interests and rights of Arabs and Palestinians,” he said.

“Hamas does not differentiate between the two presidential candidates, Obama and McCain, because their policies regarding the Arab-Israel conflict are the same and are hostile to us, therefore we do have no preference and are not wishing for either of them to win,” Zuhri said.-----

Otis Moss III
Who Is He? - New pastor of Obama's Church. Trinity United Church of Christ (UCC) in Chicago.
What he thinks/has done?
The church describes itself as "unashamedly Black and unapologetically Christian" and embraces what it calls an "Africentric" theology. Believes Wright "brilliant". "There has always been "haters" when it comes to the black church." Believes in Liberation Theology. Believes the "hate" will help them "grow". And that they are following the hand of God. Should Media be fined?

Only time Media should get in "trouble" is for outright lying. And there is recourse for that already in our court.. Slander and Libel suits.

I don't mind at all the "fairness" of it all. I do mind when they pretend to be unbiased, and people believe their are unbiased when they are not.
That is one thing I do love about Fox News. They disclose if they are a Republican pundint, what book they wrote, who they agree with, what they agree with. And then they all talk about it. It was clear to me in the post debate chatter there was one Republican one Democrat, and one writer of a book regarding Moderates, and then a moderator. It was very even handed, and I totally disagreed with the Dem and totally agreed with the Rep and had no idea where the moderator stood. She asked leading questions, but for both sides.
However watching just a snippet of pre-debate coverage from the 2nd debate with Katie Couric I couldn't stand it at all, she was very in the dem pocket and there was no alternative host.

Prayers and thoughts for this family

http://sgirl79.blogspot.com/

What a truely inspirational story. Love and Prayers to your family.. We'll all see Isaac in heaven.

"
Isaac was found to have a life threatening disease while in the womb but his courageous Christian parents valued his life. They did not abort, one of only 3 their doctor had seen KEEP the baby with a diagnosis of a chromosomal abnormality. Kudos, very inspirational!

Isaac Timothy Delisle

Family and Friends
I sit with a lack of words...

Isaac Timothy Delisle was born and was with his precious mom and dad for 16 minutes and then Jesus welcomed him home. Stacy and Spencer are able to be with him and hold him.
The doctor said he was beautiful!!
Stacy went through the surgery well. The doctor said that they both are full of great courage and strength.

More details will come when we get them.

Details about a memorial service will be coming soon. I will try to give updates as we get them.

Obama and his wife 'are part of our neighborhood and part of our social circle,' said Elizabeth Chandler, a neighbor of Ayers'." (Trevor Jensen, Robert Mitchum and Mary Owen, "Bill Ayers' Turbulent Past Contrasts With Quiet Academ ic Life," Chicago Tribune, 4/17/08)

Joe Biden's Lies

http://www.johnmccain.com/McCainReport/Read.aspx?guid=343ba934-6417-4b65-ac9e-92348acb5e97

Joe Biden's 14 Lies

1. TAX VOTE: Biden said McCain voted “the exact same way” as Obama to increase taxes on Americans earning just $42,000, but McCain DID NOT VOTE THAT WAY.

2. AHMEDINIJAD MEETING: Joe Biden lied when he said that Barack Obama never said that he would sit down unconditionally with Mahmoud Ahmedinijad of Iran. Barack Obama did say specifically, and Joe Biden attacked him for it.

3. OFFSHORE OIL DRILLING: Biden said, “Drill we must.” But Biden has opposed offshore drilling and even compared offshore drilling to “raping” the Outer Continental Shelf.”

4. TROOP FUNDING: Joe Biden lied when he indicated that John McCain and Barack Obama voted the same way against funding the troops in the field. John McCain opposed a bill that included a timeline, that the President of the United States had already said he would veto regardless of it’s passage.

5. OPPOSING CLEAN COAL: Biden says he’s always been for clean coal, but he just told a voter that he is against clean coal and any new coal plants in America and has a record of voting against clean coal and coal in the U.S. Senate.

6. ALERNATIVE ENERGY VOTES: According to FactCheck.org, Biden is exaggerating and overstating John McCain’s record voting for alternative energy when he says he voted against it 23 times.

7. HEALTH INSURANCE: Biden falsely said McCain will raise taxes on people's health insurance coverage -- they get a tax credit to offset any tax hike. Independent fact checkers have confirmed this attack is false

8. OIL TAXES: Biden falsely said Palin supported a windfall profits tax in Alaska -- she reformed the state tax and revenue system, it's not a windfall profits tax.

9. AFGHANISTAN / GEN. MCKIERNAN COMMENTS: Biden said that top military commander in Iraq said the principles of the surge could not be applied to Afghanistan, but the commander of NATO's International Security Assistance Force Gen. David D. McKiernan said that there were principles of the surge strategy, including working with tribes, that could be applied in Afghanistan.

10. REGULATION: Biden falsely said McCain weakened regulation -- he actually called for more regulation on Fannie and Freddie.

11. IRAQ: When Joe Biden lied when he said that John McCain was “dead wrong on Iraq”, because Joe Biden shared the same vote to authorize the war and differed on the surge strategy where they John McCain has been proven right.

12. TAX INCREASES: Biden said Americans earning less than $250,000 wouldn’t see higher taxes, but the Obama-Biden tax plan would raise taxes on individuals making $200,000 or more.

13. BAILOUT: Biden said the economic rescue legislation matches the four principles that Obama laid out, but in reality it doesn’t meet two of the four principles that Obama outlined on Sept. 19, which were that it include an emergency economic stimulus package, and that it be part of “part of a globally coordinated effort with our partners in the G-20.”

14. REAGAN TAX RATES: Biden is wrong in saying that under Obama, Americans won't pay any more in taxes then they did under Reagan.

How to heal bones

In November of 2007 I underwent my second knee surgery on my left knee. They needed to realign the patellar. So they cut the bone and repositioned the ligament, in addition to a patellar shave. Called a Distar extensor realignment.
Sorry for any misspellings.
Anyway it is now October 1st 2008 and my knee feels great, but my shin bone where then reattached the bone with two screws still hurts. I feel pain at a great %age to most people, hense my fight with IBS. I am a tough cookie, but things still bother me at a higher degree. The bone is healed fine, but it still hurts.
I have went through physical therapy, and still it lingers.. the pain that is.
So I am on my own to find out ways to live with and reduce the pain. Anti-inflamatory Rx is what the surgeon recommends, however they did not seem to help. Maybe since they were oral the rest of my body used them, without sending enough to my knee? Who knows, it was also a generic instead of name brand so that might also be an issue. Darn insurance anyway.

I have seen a naturopath who gave me moxa, an herbal oil, homeopathics, and also does oral herbals. I have not been back for about 6 months as it is over $50 a time to see him and I was not improving.

I currently have a TENs unit that definately helps, but it is a short term remedy. I am starting to take glucosamine and Chondroiton internally, and I just ordered a creame with herbals for inflamation etc in it, it is supposed to help rebuild the bone, and that is what I need. We will see.

Here is a website I just found that has dietary recommendations etc.
