Notes-
We were sick, I worked thru headaches and migraines this unit. So we only had one fieldtrip. To JoAnn Fabrics to find wool yarn.
We did also go to a Monster Truck show which was not part of the unit, just for fun. It started at 7:30 so even by the time it started the kids were tired. Isaac fell asleep on my lap and we left at intermission 10pm!

Study Shows McCain Media Coverage Mostly Negative

The Project for Excellence in Journalism's report shows John McCain's media coverage has been 57 percent negative, while Barack Obama's has been 29 percent negative.

NEW YORK -- John McCain may long for the days when Barack Obama got the lion's share of the media attention: Coverage of the Republican candidate has been overwhelmingly negative since the conventions ended, a study released Wednesday found.
The Project for Excellence in Journalism's report illustrates how the media echo chamber can send things spiraling out of control for a candidate. It's likely to give ammunition to people who say the press has been biased against McCain, but the organization said its findings on this were inconclusive.
"It's quite possible for there to be elements of enthusiasm for one candidate or another," said Tom Rosenstiel, director of the Washington-based think tank. "That's a failure of professionalism if it's there. But this report can't suss it out."
McCain and Obama have received an equal amount of media attention since the conventions.
The project judged 57 percent of the stories about McCain as negative, with 14 percent positive. The rest were neutral.
Obama's coverage was mixed: 36 percent positive, 29 percent negative, 35 percent neutral, the study found.
"I guess it's inevitable, but it does reflect the relentless degree to which winning begets winning," Rosenstiel said. "The polls are so ubiquitous that it is difficult for them not to be the picture frame through which the press views everything."
McCain's poll numbers have been sinking. As a result, many of the stories about him are about why his poll numbers are sinking -- and how whatever he says or does is an attempt to stop his poll numbers from sinking, he said.
The economic crisis, and McCain's response to it, also played poorly for him in the press. His attempt to deflect attention with attacks on Obama and his ties to 1960s radical William Ayers did even worse, the study found. During this time, news organizations also did critical fact-checks on some McCain ads, including one on Obama and sex education.
Changes in the media have also heightened the sense of piling on, Rosenstiel said. There are more polls to report on, hence more stories to say McCain is doing poorly in them. The 24-hour news networks are paying a great deal of attention to the campaign because it gets ratings, making for more repeating of stories done elsewhere, he said.
The cable networks have been showing off new iPhone-like technology that allows them to pull up maps of the country and data, and the electoral maps haven't been good for McCain.
Financial cutbacks also mean less time for news organizations to do enterprise reporting, again making for more repetition.
Rosenstiel noted that Obama's coverage was negative during the week after the GOP convention, when the surging McCain had the Democrat on his heels and talking about lipstick and pigs. McCain's negative coverage closely tracks the tone of Democrat Al Gore's during the 2000 campaign, he said.
A similar thing happened during the latter stages of Hillary Clinton's campaign against Obama, said David Gregory, host of MSNBC's "Race to the White House."
"There's a lot of focus on the campaign that is in decline to explain why that is happening, and then it becomes in the eye of the beholder whether that is fair or unfair treatment," Gregory said. "The best we can do is challenge both sides substantively."
The McCain campaign did not immediately return messages seeking comment.
Sarah Palin has received three times the press attention as the Democratic vice presidential candidate, Joe Biden, the study found. Her stories were judged 39 percent negative, 33 percent mixed and 28 percent positive.
Palin's coverage started out positive but turned when reporters went to Alaska to check on her record as governor. The study found only 5 percent of the stories were about Palin's family, most of them in the days after it was revealed her daughter was pregnant.
The Project for Excellence in Journalism studied some 2,412 stories from 48 news outlets for its study, including newspapers, Web sites and broadcast and cable news. A smaller sample, 857 stories, was used to judge the tone of the coverage.

I attended Newberg City Council meeting tonight, having become aware that this afternoon there was a hearing and public testimony regarding a daytime curfew ordinance. By all indication, they intended to pass this into law with a "sunset clause." There had been a previous work session a few months ago. April McGowan and Susan Dawson from the local home school support group and 3 other ladies gave testimony against the ordinance, along with myself. HSLDA had sent a fairly lengthy memorandum against daytime curfews signed by T.J . Schmidt. I informed the council that HSLDA has 85,000-90,000 families closely associated with it and that OCEANetwork has never supported daytime curfews as a state organization.

The mayor and five councilors were present. Because of the questions the council asked, I would have guessed a sure passage, especially with the escape route (sunset clause), that it would help fight crime, and the notion that 'it really won't hurt anything.' The final vote: one abstention (he may have proposed the bill), and 5 denying the passage of the ordinance.

By God's grace there is no daytime curfew in Newberg. Maybe in our spare time we should begin overturning these slippery-slope bad laws.

Victory for Homeschooling Freedom in Newberg

The Newberg City Council met to decide upon a day light curfew, Ordinance No. 2008-2007 on October 20, 2008.

After hearing Chief of Police Casey speak in favor of the ordinance, and after much discussion, also in favor of the ordinance by the city council, the public was invited to speak. In attendance was a representative from OCEANetwork, and five homeschooling families.


Each spoke from their own personal experiences and concerns. The council was very respectful in their questions, but had some trouble empathizing w ith our concerns about the day light curfew. Once we were done speaking, the council deliberated. To be frank, it didn't sound as though we had made much of an impact with our speeches. As there was no turnout by the private school sector, only the homeschooling sector, one of the councilors deducted that they must be in favor of the ordinance. Two of the council members were undecided – on the fence – and a third wanted to have more research done, and perhaps hear more arguments at another time. Then Councilor Marc Shelton spoke. He had empathized with us, and more over, was completely against the ordinance. He took issue with the statement that the private school system must be in favor of the ordinance because they hadn't attended the meeting. He stated that if the ordinance passed, then they would most certainly be hearing from them and many more homeschooling families.

At that time, Councilor President Bob Larson agreed with Councilor Shelton, as did Mayor Bob Andrews. Then, being swayed by the other councilor's opinions, Councilors Mike Boyes and Bart Reirson withdrew their concerns and sided with Councilor Shelton. Councilor Roger Currier still felt he wanted more time and research to make the decision and abstained from the final vote—to deny Ordinance No. 2008-2707.

Having been there, seeing the odds and hearing the arguments in favor of the ordinance, I have no doubt that the Lord won the battle. I am still in awe that we won.

Thank you to everyone who wrote, called and contacted the city council. Thank you to OCEANetwork for your support (making the long drive into Newberg), and to the HSLDA who took the time to send legal documents to the city in opposition to the ordinance. It was an awe inspiring and amazing evening. I hope you will all continue to fight to preserve our homeschooling freedoms in Oregon.

Newburg City Counsel - Daylight Curfew

Newberg City Council considering daytime curfew. You can help.

Newberg City Council is considering enacting a daytime curfew at their meeting tonight (7 p.m. Monday, October 20, 2008). Daytime curfews allow police officers to stop and question school-aged children who are in public places during school hours. This, of course, is problematic for homeschool students who might be walking to the library (or George Fox University in Newberg), on their way to a job or otherwise out in public without a parent during school hours.

Here’s how you can help:

1. Pray for the meeting tonight and the home educators who will be presenting testimony.

2. If you live in the Newberg-Dundee area or come into Newberg routinely during school hours, please attend the meeting Monday October 20th at 7 p.m. at the Newberg Public Safety Building, 401 E. Third Street, Newberg even if you don’t plan on giving testimony.

3. If you live in one of the cities in Oregon which currently have daytime curfews and if your family has been negatively impacted by the curfew, please e-mail April McGowan at april.mcgowan@gmail.com before 5 p.m. with a paragraph or two on what happened to your family.

Homeschooling Check-In

We are doing great.
We are using Weaver from Alpha Omega, which is a Christian Unit Study Method. I add and subtract from that for History, Science, Bible, and Social Studies and Language Arts.
We do Saxon Math, both boys are in Saxon 1 at different places, and we are doing MUS together.. we started 2 weeks ago.
For Phonics we have taken a break from Teach your Child to read as it was to the point the kids could sound out words, but they weren't remembering the word to be able to just read words in the sentance form. So I added in Flashcards with Dolche words, putting 5 stars on each one before it is "done". Meaning they have to say it 5 times without help before it is considered learned. This has helped a lot with sounds like ING and ow, and simple sight words like The. Then they each read a Bob Book, I have the set of 5, so we are working through those. They enjoy them and do not get nearly as frustrated, though they are using the same words.. there is only one sentence per page, instead of a paragraph or so.
Josiah has started a handwriting book, Italic C and he loves it, so he does a page a day usually.

On our off days, when I have a migraine etc the boys have Rod and Staff workbooks, that are for fun, and They have Word Building paces from ACE. I also have them use these if I am working with the other one reading, and there is no project or art scheduled for the day.

All in all I wish they were a little further along reading wise, but boys will only go so fast. Josiah is above the reading level of my neighbor boy who is a held back 1st grader, so I figure as long as they don't get too frustrated I am pushing just hard enough. It is a bit of an issue for me sometimes mentally as I learned to read when I was 4, and did high 1st grade reading in K, but I just have to keep reminding myself that they are not me, and have their own 'gifts'.

What he believes/has done? In fact, the 1951 report of the Commission on Subversive Activities to the Legislature of the Territory of Hawaii identified him as a CPUSA member. What's more, anti-communist congressional committees, including the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC), accused Davis of involvement in several communist-front organizations.

What Obama says -Obama had an admitted relationship with someone who was publicly identified as a member of the Communist Party USA (CPUSA). The record shows that Obama was in Hawaii from 1971-1979, where, at some point in time, he developed a close relationship, almost like a son, with Davis, listening to his "poetry" and getting advice on his career path. But Obama, in his book, Dreams From My Father, refers to him repeatedly as just "Frank."

Hamas promply unendorsed Obama, a Christian who has had difficulty dispelling a rumor campaign suggesting he is a Muslim and that his advisers have a pro-Arab bent.

“Obama’s comments have confirmed that there will be no change in the U.S. administration’s foreign policy on the Arab-Israeli conflict,” Hamas official Sami Abu Zuhri told Reuters in Gaza.

“The Democratic and Republican parties support totally the Israeli occupation at the expense of the interests and rights of Arabs and Palestinians,” he said.

“Hamas does not differentiate between the two presidential candidates, Obama and McCain, because their policies regarding the Arab-Israel conflict are the same and are hostile to us, therefore we do have no preference and are not wishing for either of them to win,” Zuhri said.-----

Should Media be fined?

Only time Media should get in "trouble" is for outright lying. And there is recourse for that already in our court.. Slander and Libel suits.

I don't mind at all the "fairness" of it all. I do mind when they pretend to be unbiased, and people believe their are unbiased when they are not.
That is one thing I do love about Fox News. They disclose if they are a Republican pundint, what book they wrote, who they agree with, what they agree with. And then they all talk about it. It was clear to me in the post debate chatter there was one Republican one Democrat, and one writer of a book regarding Moderates, and then a moderator. It was very even handed, and I totally disagreed with the Dem and totally agreed with the Rep and had no idea where the moderator stood. She asked leading questions, but for both sides.
However watching just a snippet of pre-debate coverage from the 2nd debate with Katie Couric I couldn't stand it at all, she was very in the dem pocket and there was no alternative host.

Isaac Timothy Delisle was born and was with his precious mom and dad for 16 minutes and then Jesus welcomed him home. Stacy and Spencer are able to be with him and hold him.
The doctor said he was beautiful!!
Stacy went through the surgery well. The doctor said that they both are full of great courage and strength.

1. TAX VOTE: Biden said McCain voted “the exact same way” as Obama to increase taxes on Americans earning just $42,000, but McCain DID NOT VOTE THAT WAY.

2. AHMEDINIJAD MEETING: Joe Biden lied when he said that Barack Obama never said that he would sit down unconditionally with Mahmoud Ahmedinijad of Iran. Barack Obama did say specifically, and Joe Biden attacked him for it.

MCKIERNAN COMMENTS: Biden said that top military commander in Iraq said the principles of the surge could not be applied to Afghanistan, but the commander of NATO's International Security Assistance Force Gen. David D. McKiernan said that there were principles of the surge strategy, including working with tribes, that could be applied in Afghanistan.

10. REGULATION: Biden falsely said McCain weakened regulation -- he actually called for more regulation on Fannie and Freddie.

Weaver Volume 2 Unit 2 Chapter 2

So we just finished our Second Unit/Chapter in Alpha Omega's Weaver Volume 2.
This is a 5 day unit, and we did it in one week.

Day 1- Read books on Families, Wrote out our Family tree, used a printout different than the one in the resource section as the lines were larger. Started weaving baskets. Each boy and I each did one. Then Josiah and I both made a second one. I bought the Camp Kit (for schools, camps, scouts, Bible schools etc) that contains 15 bases and #3 round reed (two packages), and some plastic beads. From http://www.basketweaving.com for $29.95. How to heal bones

In November of 2007 I underwent my second knee surgery on my left knee. They needed to realign the patellar. So they cut the bone and repositioned the ligament, in addition to a patellar shave. Called a Distar extensor realignment.
Sorry for any misspellings.
Anyway it is now October 1st 2008 and my knee feels great, but my shin bone where then reattached the bone with two screws still hurts. I feel pain at a great %age to most people, hense my fight with IBS. I am a tough cookie, but things still bother me at a higher degree. The bone is healed fine, but it still hurts.
I have went through physical therapy, and still it lingers.. the pain that is.
So I am on my own to find out ways to live with and reduce the pain. Anti-inflamatory Rx is what the surgeon recommends, however they did not seem to help. Maybe since they were oral the rest of my body used them, without sending enough to my knee? Who knows, it was also a generic instead of name brand so that might also be an issue. Darn insurance anyway.

I have seen a naturopath who gave me moxa, an herbal oil, homeopathics, and also does oral herbals. I have not been back for about 6 months as it is over $50 a time to see him and I was not improving.

I currently have a TENs unit that definately helps, but it is a short term remedy. I am starting to take glucosamine and Chondroiton internally, and I just ordered a creame with herbals for inflamation etc in it, it is supposed to help rebuild the bone, and that is what I need. We will see.
